NetworkPlay Signs On Airtel For CPM Advertising On DTH; Eyes Mobile, Video

Posted by telcobizpedia on August 25, 2009

From http://www.medianama.com/2009/08/223-networkplay-signs-on-airtel-for-cpm-advertising-on-dth-eyes-mobile-video/ on August 25, 2009

Capital18 funded advertising network NetworkPlay.in has inked a deal with Airtel DTH for advertising on DTH in India. Interestingly enough, NetworkPlay CEO & MD Rammohan Sundaram told MediaNama that the company is going to sell CPM based advertising on DTH. This obviously means that Airtel DTH needs to be able to measure the impressions and relay the data back to the advertiser – there has to be a feedback loop with Airtel DTH. So far, interactivity has been limited on DTH. The company will offer video and image based advertisements on the DTH boot screen, iTravel, iShop, iMatinee, iCity, iNews, iPizza, iAstro and other Airtel DTH services. According to Sundaram, Airtel DTH service has a penetration of over 1.3 Million households and growing at a rate of 16 percent month on month, and reaches a SEC A & B audience in over 4000 towns in India. The total DTH userbase in India is 13 million; Tata Sky (4 million) and Dish TV (5.07 million as of March 31, 2009) are the top operators.

Sundaram says that the tie-up with Airtel is exclusive and they have been working on the deal for 6-7 months now; they are also actively pursuing deals with other DTH operators as well. The company is looking to launch Video and Mobile advertising solutions in the next couple of quarters, but Sundaram declined to comment on further plans.

Of late, we’ve seen a significant amount of collaboration between Internet, Mobile and DTH companies, with multiple services like ticketing, shopping, matrimonial, job classifieds and others being enabled on DTH. The increasing digitization of platforms means that digital services can be enabled across Internet, Mobile, IPTV, DTH etc; it doesn’t have to be about the world wide web alone.

BSNL to outsource customer-care to BPOs

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 18, 2009

Thomas K Thomas on The Hindu Business Line on June 18, 2009

New Delhi, June 17 To ramp up its customer service capabilities, state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is scouting for private call centre units that can operate contact centres for addressing complaints from fixed line and broadband subscribers across the country.

BSNL has invited expression of interest from private players for setting up the contact centres.

According to the expression of interest floated by the company, the private player will set up, operate and maintain the contact centres, including agents at their own premises. The agents will be required to handle queries from customers and provide solutions. This will also include obtaining customer feedback.

Initially, the contract will be for three years and will be extendable for the next two years on year-to-year basis at the discretion of BSNL. The PSU may expand the scope of work to include BSNL’s other services apart from landline and broadband services.

Eligibility

Only companies with experience in operation of contact centres in India for the last two consecutive years with minimum of 1,000 operational seats deployed for domestic clients and with at least 500 operational seats at a single location are eligible to bid for the contract.

The call centre company should also have experience in servicing a telecom service provider operating in more than three States. The company should have at least four contact centres/call centres in India at different geographical locations for the last one year.

Outsourcing route

BSNL is increasingly outsourcing its operations to private players. To save on capital expenditure and roll out services faster, BSNL is taking the outsourcing route in a big way for new projects.

The PSU has invited bids from private players for at least five of its projects including offering WiMax services, Internet Protocol Television and setting up Internet Data Services. It recently sought expression of interest from large retail chains to sell BSNL products and services. The trend is in line with what private telecom operators are doing. Majors such as Bharti Airtel have outsourced most of their operations to third party vendors.

BSNL opts for franchisee route to reduce costs

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 16, 2009

Thomas K Thomas on The Hindu Business Line on June 16, 2009

New Delhi, June 15 In a bid to save on capital expenditure and to roll out services faster, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd is taking the franchisee route in a big way for new projects.

The PSU has invited bids from private players for at least five of its projects, including for offering WiMax services, Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and setting up Internet Data Services.

According to BSNL officials, the company may be saving more than Rs 10,000 crore of capital investment by adopting the franchisee model. Take for example the controversial WiMax project wherein the company is planning to allow a private player in each circle to utilise its spectrum and back haul infrastructure to offer high-speed broadband on a revenue share basis. The franchisee will make all the investments required to set up the network and also undertake marketing and sales on behalf of BSNL. It is following a similar business model for IPTV services.

Risks minimised

According to BSNL officials, this model also minimises risks for the state-owned company especially in areas where the technology or the service being offered is relatively new and untested.

“While we are offering our traditional businesses like mobile ,fixed line and long distance telephony on our own we are seeking private participation for new services like IPTV and WiMax-based services where we are yet to see an uptake in demand across the world. In the franchisee model, we let private entrepreneurs take the risk,” said a BSNL official.

Most of the deals being worked out by BSNL include transfer of business operation to the PSU after a certain period of time which means that if the service does succeed then BSNL gets to run the show at a later date.

BSNL is also now slowly beginning to use private players in marketing and sales activities. It has recently sought expression of interest from large retail chains to sell BSNL products and services over their counters.

Private operators

The trend is in line with what private telecom operators are doing. Most big players such as Bharti Airtel have outsourced most of their operations to third party vendors. While BSNL being a Government-run company cannot outsource its operations to a private player, it is using the franchisee model to create efficiency in its operations.

BSNL officials said that depending on the successes of these projects which have been launched the PSU will evaluate further opportunities to partner private players on a franchisee model.

Bring home the world on a single line

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 12, 2009

Thomas K. Thomas on The Hindu Business Line on June 12, 2009

New Delhi, June 11 Mrs Vinita Gupta, a housewife living in a residential complex in Greater Noida, does not know that she is among the first in the country to experience the latest in broadband technology — Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON).

What it offers

Thanks to this technology, she, along with others who recently moved to this 3,000-unit complex, has access to services such as movie-on-demand, high definition television, surveillance systems, fire alarm system, or can even switch off lights and fans at home while sitting elsewhere.

GPON is an optical fibre cable access technology for delivering high-capacity broadband services that allows carriers to deploy a whole range of telecom and entertainment services on a single line.

While Mrs Gupta has taken only the IPTV and high-speed Internet services, she can even keep a watch on her house via her mobile when she is away on a holiday through the elaborate surveillance system being set up in the housing complex.

The solution is being offered by Swedish major Ericsson, which has partnered with Delhi-based property management services provider Radius Infratel Pvt Ltd to take this technology to other parts of the country.

The two are now set to bag a major contract for wiring up the Commonwealth Games Village and another for rolling out GPON throughout Dwarka in South-West Delhi.

This technology offers 100 times more capacity and is at least six times faster than the existing wire line broadband systems.

Operators, including BSNL and Bharti Airtel, are toying with the technology and the Ericsson-backed projects could just signal the beginning of high speed broadband finally coming to India.

BSNL to invest Rs 15,000 cr in FY10

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 11, 2009

Virendra Singh Rawat / Lucknow June 11, 2009, 0:56 IST on The Business Standard

Public sector telecom giant Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will invest Rs 15,000 crore this fiscal to upgrade its infrastructure and roll out new value-added services.

“Our capital expenditure in different verticals this year would be around Rs 15,000 crore,” BSNL CMD Kuldeep Goyal told Business Standard.

BSNL will use the investment for mobile expansion and for services like 3G, broadband, wireless broadband, IPTV, WiMAX, mobile commerce (m-commerce), value-added landline, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and others.

“Our aim is to add 35 million telephone lines by the end of this fiscal across the country and to commission fresh 3G network,” he added.

BSNL had launched 3G services on February 2 and, at present, it is available in 70 towns. “We plan to provide 3G services in 700 cities by the end of calendar 2009,” Goyal said.

He added that, for achieving the targeted mobile growth, more spectrum was needed by operators.

“The availability of spectrum for mobile phone operators in general is less than other countries. However, this has not affected the quality of services being offered,” he claimed.

“We will offer wireless broadband through WiMAX technology in 1,000 blocks of the country out of the total 6,000 blocks. The state-run telecom operator will roll out franchisee-based WiMAX service in the country, starting with Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

“We have floated tenders for offering similar a WiMAX service in other states as well,” he said. “We are also working on improving our quality of service and have engaged AC Nielson to test the quality of our mobile service,” Goyal added.

Interview: Reaching out for last mile with FTTH

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 11, 2009

From www.ciol.com on June 11, 2009

BANGALORE, INDIA: At your wits’ end owing to slow broadband speed? Time to move on to to fiber.

Of late, fiber network has emerged as a strong alternative to the existing broadband accessing technology, DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) in India.

The India optical fiber market showed a CAGR of 43 per cent (from 2003-2008), making it the fastest growing market in the world. In no time, India saw an upcoming of VoIP and IPTV usage, which in turn calls for more bandwidth (copper wire has limited bandwidth compared to fiber).

Low operational and maintenance cost, higher bandwidth and decreasing prices are further augmenting fiber network’s growth, and today, it is all set to enter your homes to cater to speedier broadband requirements.

Telecoms vendor Ericsson recently deployed India’s first-ever residential FTTH-GPON (Fiber-To-The-Home- Gigabit Passive Optical Network) project with Radius Synergies.

P Balaji, vice president, marketing & strategy, Ericsson, says: “Ericsson had its eyes on India’s growing broadband base, ever since it strengthened its IP portfolio with the acquisition of  Entrisphere, way back in 2007. The adoption of fixed broadband access is seeing resurgence at the residential and enterprise levels and FTTH technology will play a critical role in driving this forward.” He was speaking to CIOL with regard to Ericsson’s FTTH launch.

CIOL: The end-to-end fiber access solution from Ericsson is based on EDA 1500 GPON system, which offers the highest capacity available in the market and its Micronet and Ribbonet air-blown fiber, and microcable solutions. Can you elaborate on this?

P Balaji: Ericsson EDA (Ethernet Data Access) 1500 provides the highest capacity GPON solution in the world. Based on a carrier-class platform, EDA 1500 is key for the converged high-capacity, all-IP fiber networks needed for advanced services such as IPTV. It comprises Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) and EntriView.

“Ribbonet and Micronet” are ducting and fiber solutions for building the last mile access.

Ericsson’s Ribbonet Air Blown Fiber (ABF) system has been developed specifically to provide fast, efficient and flexible fiber distribution in the drop and premises network for medium to long-distances.

Ericsson Micronet Air Blown Micro Cable system is useful when deploying metropolitan and access networks.

CIOL: Will FTTH solve bandwidth problem in India?

PB: FTTH is the way forward for wireline networks of the future as the need for large bandwidth applications grows. Fiber technology can accommodate such bandwidth requirements for applications and high-speed data transmissions with ease.

Fiber also has duplex transmission ability which means signals can be transmitted both ways-from exchange to customer and vice versa, which plays a vital role in applications such as interactive IPTV.

CIOL: Where do you see the demand coming from, with Indian metros already furnished with copper networks and real estate business is a bit dull?

PB: According to industry experts, the market for FTTH services in India is expected to be much higher than other markets such as the US, because of the huge size of the Indian population.

Penetration of fiber infrastructure has been rising in the Indian cities since the last five years and most of the commercial buildings today have fiber connectivity or fiber ring passes, parallel to existing copper.

For buildings which have pre-existing cable infrastructure inside, Ericsson has two solutions namely FTTC/B (Fiber to the Curb/Building) and FTTH (Fiber to the Home).

Today, condo homes are increasingly becoming popular in India and connected homes is a big trend. Therefore, the need for bandwidth hungry applications is going to be high. Further, the unique business model being followed by companies such as Radius, who built the open access infrastructure in a partnership arrangement, should help create value for developers, facility management companies and service providers.

CIOL: What is the scope of FTTH–GPON technology in India?

PB: Current market estimates indicate that India could be having as many as one million FTTH lines within the next three years. The main driving forces for FTTH in India are high speed, bandwidth applications such as VoIP, IPTV, HDTV, Smart Home etc.

With a marked improvement in performance over DSL, adoption is expected to gain ground leading to reduced cost of services. This will drive users to easily avail FTTH services at home even though they might use other services like normal TV.

We are in discussions with the key market players for FTTH–GPON deployment. The fact that operators are keen to roll out close to a million lines in the next 2-3 years represents the sense of optimism and potential about this domain.

To catalyze the growth of FTTH, we are working with carriers and also promoting initiatives of infrastructure companies such as Radius, who plan to build GPON-based FTTH network and provide open access to all the carriers, on a Pan-India basis.

Being an ITU-T backed technology, GPON has a high degree of acceptance within the carrier community. Although it is true that its benefits are just starting to be realized in India, what is important to note is that leading operators such as BSNL are convinced of its potential and have already begun its adoption. Others too are looking at following suit shortly.

We foresee the growth of FTTH GPON as a network and of “Open access infrastructure based upon GPON–FTTH” as fixed broadband in India. Initiatives like RADIUS NANO – Neutral Access Network Operations – will take the lead on FTTH rollouts.

CIOL: Going forward, what will be the challenges in laying optic fiber in India?

PB: The biggest challenge in FTTH deployment is the passive (fiber access) planning and roll out. As reaching the last mile can be difficult, it is essential to focus on the logical planning of the Access network.

Besides, like any new technology, the market uptake will initially be slow. Therefore, ‘rightsizing’ capacity build out is extremely important. In this regard, Ericsson has a unique proposition because of its own special Air Blown Fiber solution, which makes deployments easy and cost effective, reducing OPEX spends by lowering AMC costs.

System integration is another challenge because of the numerous active, passive infrastructure elements.

CIOL: Won’t high cost of service, compared to DSL networks, be a hindrance to FTTH’s penetration?

PB: There are certain applications which require higher bandwidth for which demand is increasing. In today’s environment, enterprises are looking at continuous 24×7 connectivity as well as quality of service (QoS).

This trend is expected to be also echoed by the residential sector. Hence, while enterprises will show high acceptance and facilitate service uptake in the short to medium term, in the longer term, with IPTV gaining popularity, contribution from the residential sector is likely to increase substantially leading to lower cost of service, higher market penetration which will drive affordability of the fiber based infrastructure over DSL.

Increasingly, operators are also seeing a business case in terms of user acceptability and TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), as they begin to roll out FTTH–GPON based networks. Moreover, going forward, prices will fall which will lead to reduction in tariffs.

WiMax services: BSNL invites bids afresh

Posted by telcobizpedia on June 6, 2009

Thomas K Thomas on The Hindu Business Line on June 6, 2009

New Delhi, June 5 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Friday invited bids afresh from private players to roll out WiMax services on a franchisee basis.

The PSU floated a new tender after it scrapped the earlier one to rope in a strategic partner.

The earlier tender ran into rough weather after it was discovered that five of the six bidders shortlisted by the PSU existed only on paper. The five companies had identical corporate information including contact address, contact person, e-mail id, and lawyer.

BSNL’s technical committee had disqualified global companies including Cisco and Soma Networks even as it chose to keep the bids of the five firms.

Political parties, including the BJP, had alleged corruption at the highest level. The issue had also caught the attention of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Tender norms

BSNL has now invited bids in 16 circles giving another opportunity to the international companies. The tender documents will be available from June 12. The technical bids will be opened on August 4. Companies with a turnover of over Rs 100 crore for two consecutive financial years can apply. The franchisee company will have to invest in setting up the WiMax network. The company offering the highest revenue share to BSNL will be selected.

BSNL had earlier selected Soma Network on a pilot basis for Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Therefore there will be no competitive bidding in these three circles. The PSU is also in the process of issuing another tender for buying 7000 WiMax base stations to set up community service centres in the rural areas.

Cost reduction

The State-owned company is increasingly adopting the franchisee model to reduce costs. It is already offering IPTV services with HFCL on revenue-sharing basis. The PSU has invited bids from private players to set up Internet Data Centres (IDC) in various parts of the country on a revenue share basis.

The centres are expected to be set up over the next six months after which the PSU will go after outsourcing contracts for services such as web hosting, co-location, data warehousing and Internet managed services.

BSNL scouts for pvt partners for Internet Data Centres

Posted by telcobizpedia on May 31, 2009

The Hindu Business Line on 31 May 2009

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi, May 30 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd has invited bids from private players to set up Internet Data Centres (IDCs) in various parts of the country on a revenue sharing basis.

The centres are expected to be set up over the next six months after which the PSU will go for outsourcing contracts for services such as Web hosting, co-location, data warehousing and Internet managed services.

A data centre is a facility where customer can outsource the management and day-to-day operations of their Web sites or other IP connected applications. Customers can purchase the server hardware, rack space, bandwidth and network equipment. In addition, customers get a secure place to physically house their equipment with regulated power, dedicated Internet connection, security, and fire detection equipment.

Although some companies have chosen to address their requirements in-house and to maintain complete control over their Internet Infrastructure, the pressures of provisioning IT Infrastructure are increasingly leading a lot of corporate houses to consider outsourcing their e-business infrastructure requirements.

Private telecom players such as Reliance Communications and Tata Communications are already offering such services. Then there are Internet Service Providers such as Sify which are also in this segment. These private players may bid for the BSNL project.

According to the expression of interest floated by BSNL, the private partner will have to invest the entire amount required to set up the IDCs. BSNL will provide its national communication infrastructure as the backbone for the proposed centres.

As part of the shared hosting services, BSNL plans to bundle in free email accounts, depending on the package customer subscribes to.

“Outsourcing the management and monitoring of mission-critical Internet operations is crucial for stability in an increasingly complex networking environment. Beyond the sheer complexity of infrastructure itself, the uncertainties of ever-changing relationships with telcos, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), and rapidly changing technologies often render it difficult for businesses to make the best choices. BSNL’s managed services will provide cutting-edge industry expertise to speed up the time-to-market, in the most cost-effective manner,” said a BSNL official.

The PSU is also planning to offer messaging solutions which will enable customers to outsource their entire e-mail operations.

BSNL has been increasingly adopting the public-private partnership model for its new services. It has, for example, partnered with Soma Networks for offering WiMax based broadband services in three States. Similarly, the PSU has roped in HFCL to roll out its IPTV services.

Analysts said that the franchisee model lowers the risk and cost for the PSU since the private partner invests all the money required for the project.

IPTV in India is all set to unleash the potential of fundamentally transforming the experience of watching television by bring in two-way interactivity, storage of content and greater control over the television experience, while tzling on “Strategic Challenges & Opportunities for the introduction of IPTV in India”
IPTV would also help reduce dependence on information via Internet as information on video could be reached out to the masses. Yadav saw IPTV reversing the high bandwidth requirement of Internet as IPTV Service providers have a repository of content . Video browser would now be available for TV. This would open up many new business opportunities with new technologies due to the time shift advantage of IPTV—that is capacity to view programmes according to the requirement of the customer.
Puneet Garg, VP (Technical), Bharti Airtel, said that the biggest challenge was not to monetize the interactive content that IPTV offered. “from push model, IPTV creates a pull model for consumers which is a paradigm change.”
Listing the problems in adopting IPTV, Internet Service Providers Association of India president Rajesh Chharia called for more content in local languages. He also felt that customers were not willing to invest in set top boxes especially in rural markets. With several different modes of service, convergent service was the need of the hour. The insistence that ISPs need to have a capital base of Rs 100 crores to provide IPTV service was restricting the service to only four or five players leaving out the ISPs at district and regional levels. Broadcasters were putting restrictions on the number of channels the IPTV service providers could give to consumers, due to unsolved IPR issues.
IPTV service would lead to development of a “strategic eco system “covering other areas like m-commerce and e-commerce, more content development and aggregation of data. These exciting possibilities were under discussion with different ministries to enable IPTV to take off said Prithipal Singh, vice-president, IPTV India Forum.
He also expected that Commonwealth Games to be made available on mobile TV for which guidelines would be shortly available. Experts at the conference described IPTV as a “new age television experience in India” that could spread to 700 million people, a base far in excess of even mobile phone, as Mr. Yadav put it.

A Guide to India’s Telecom Market

Posted by telcobizpedia on May 12, 2009

April 19, 2009 Catherine Haslam on http://www.lightreading.com/
In March 2008, Light Reading published A Guide to India’s Telecom Operators. It proved to be one of the most popular articles on the site that year.
Now, little more than 12 months later, the Indian market has moved on considerably. Last year’s report noted that, at the end of 2007, the country’s mobile operators had a total of 233.6 million connections mong them. A year later, as 2008 ended, India’s mobile service providers boasted nearly 347 million connections, a year-on-year increase of nearly 50 percent. (See IndiaWatch: Mobile Nears 347M Subs.)
And there’s plenty of wireless growth still to come: In the first two months of 2009 alone, the mobile operators activated more than 28 million additional connections. (See India Adds 13M Subs in February and India Adds 15M Mobile Subs in January.) According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) , the total number of telecommunications services connections reached nearly 414 million at the end February 2009, of which more than 90 percent were wireless.
In stark contrast to the mind-boggling growth experienced in the mobile sector, fixed voice connections have suffered a gentle decline in recent years: At the end of February 2009, India, a country of nearly 1.2 billion inhabitants, had just 37.73 million fixed-line connections. India’s fixed-line sector is not dead, though: There’s potential growth in that market, too, as well as in the wireless world, though the big numbers and the immediate impact will continue to come in the mobile sector.
There are two obvious ways for the service providers to expand. The first is, quite simply, to connect more people. Teledensity is rising steadily but had only reached 35.65 percent at the end of February 2009, leaving significant potential for additional market expansion.
The majority of growth will now come from outside the metro circles and in the smaller cities, towns, and rural villages as teledensity in the major urban centers has reached 82 percent. It’s worth noting that 70 percent of the Indian population lives in rural areas, and, equally importantly, 64 percent of the nation’s expenditure and 56 percent of its income comes from these villages – yet India’s rural teledensity currently stands at less than 13 percent.
It’s the potential for rural area growth that drew five new players into the market in 2008, and it’s that same potential that prompted a number of international players, including Telenor ASA (Nasdaq: TELN) and Etisalat , to take major stakes in each of the five (see the Wireless Service Providers section for further details). This trend towards international ownership is now well embedded and is likely to become more prominent when India’s 3G spectrum auctions finally take place, which should be later this year.
The second growth driver is new services, such as broadband, IPTV, 3G mobile, and broadband wireless access (BWA), particularly using WiMax technology. Broadband connectivity is still very low, but state-owned operators Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) , along with private carriers such as Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Mumbai: BHARTIARTL), are slowly increasing their DSL customer bases in urban centers (See the Fixed-Line Service Providers section for more details). Cable companies, such as Hathway Cable & Datacom Pvt. Ltd. and Sify Ltd. (Nasdaq: SIFY), are also developing broadband businesses, while Reliance Communications Ltd. has concentrated on building out WiMax capabilities to complement its high-speed Ethernet access rollout.
IPTV has struggled to gain traction as a popular service since its initial hype, but is now building, albeit slowly, with a number of service providers still planning to launch their services. With the incredible amount of content created by the Bollywood movie industry, and other local content developers, the potential flexibility offered by IPTV services could work well in the Indian environment, according to Jai Maroo, an industry executive interviewed by Light Reading TV (see below).
It’s not all growth and success in the Indian telecom market, though. Plans to promote rural connectivity have fallen short after getting bogged down in bureaucracy, while the Department of Telecommunications ‘s inability to agree on terms for the 3G and BWA spectrum auctions with other government departments has delayed deployment of mobile broadband solutions, leaving operators frustrated. They are also limited by a lack of spectrum, which, despite the size of the market, is in short supply: Indian operators have received far less than the world average of around 25 MHz apiece.
With so many developments going on, and with so many other markets around the world relatively stagnant in terms of subscriber growth, there’s never been a more important time to understand the Indian telecom sector, its service provider players, and its structure. And that’s what this report provides.
As well as a visual guide to the country’s service areas, known as “circles,” this report provides a roll call of the fixed-line and mobile operators, an explanation of the licensing environment, an overview of the many companies involved in the provision of mobile tower sites as India embraces passive infrastructure sharing on a massive scale, and an overview of the country’s approach to increasing rural teledensity.

Ericsson Brings WiFi Via FTTH to Residents in India

Posted by telcobizpedia on May 10, 2009

Published on 5/6/2009 12:27:27 PM
In a 3000-unit complex near New Delhi residents can download data content at 100Mbps and access Wi-Fi in the complex’s common area.

Ericsson fiber technology is connecting homes in India for the first time to a breadth of high-end data, TV and communications services. A milestone agreement with one of India’s leading in-building management solution companies is the first step in bringing high-speed connectivity to millions of homes in this rapidly flourishing nation, the company said in a statement.

In a 3000-unit complex near New Delhi residents are enjoying personalized IPTV in high-definition, video-on-demand and other advanced entertainment services. They can download data content at 100Mbps and access Wi-Fi in the complex’s common areas and gardens. Automated lighting, electricity bill payment and security services are also being made possible with Ericsson’s high-speed fiber access solution, including Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON). Ericsson’s broadband access network is an open network solution enabling residents to select services from an internet service provider of their choice.
Demand for broadband services is quickly growing in India’s dynamic market, and Gowton Achaibar, President, Ericsson India and Sri Lanka, predicts that adoption of Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) technology will be dramatic.
“Real estate developers and property management companies realize that high-speed broadband access in the home is a value-added differentiator,” Achaibar says. “Gratifying user experience, greater convenience and a large and rapidly growing telecom market are all pointers to the immense potential of GPON in India.”
The contract with property management services provider Radius Synergies is the first such agreement for Ericsson with a customer in India’s real estate sector.
The end-to-end fiber access solution from Ericsson includes EDA 1500 GPON system, which offers the highest capacity on the market, as well as Micronet and Ribbonet air-blown fiber and microcable solutions. The contract also covers implementation, systems integration, consulting, training and support services for Radius synergies.
The GPON network enables converged services for consumers, allowing for a range of operator offerings – including voice, data and video, as well as services such as connected-home activation, security and lighting control – delivered over Ericsson’s deep fiber access network

AlcaLu, Bharti Form Joint Venture

Posted by telcobizpedia on April 30, 2009

April 30, 2009 Catherine Haslam on www.lightreading.com

Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Mumbai: BHARTIARTL) and Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) have formed a joint venture company to manage the future development and operation of the carrier’s fixed voice and broadband networks.

The new legal entity will be operated by AlcaLu, which will hold a 74 percent stake, with Bharti Airtel owning the remaining 26 percent. An AlcaLu spokesman confirmed to Light Reading that the business AlcaLu will generate from the new venture will be worth $500 million over a five-year period.
The new venture will be responsible for the design, planning, deployment, optimization, and management of Bharti Airtel’s fixed line network, which is being migrated toward an IP-based infrastructure.
AlcaLu’s role will include the management of equipment from other vendors, such as UTStarcom Inc. (Nasdaq: UTSI), which provides equipment for Bharti’s emerging IPTV business. (See Bharti Profits From Mobile Boom.)
AlcaLu would not comment on whose equipment it would be managing or how, beyond saying that the company has considerable experience managing multi-vendor networks.
The joint venture will be staffed by employees from Bharti, who will provide knowledge of the existing network and the local market, and AlcaLu, plus some new hires.
Bharti Telemedia, the Airtel division responsible for its fixed-line network, offers DSL-based broadband services in 95 cities, has nearly 1.1 million broadband subscribers, and is activating more than 100,000 new broadband connections each month. At the end of March, India had 6.22 million broadband subscribers.
Speaking yesterday as the company’s results were announced, Airtel’s CEO Manoj Kohli explained that the company’s fixed-line strategy is to concentrate on upgrading services in the 95 cities in which it operates, and that it doesn’t have plans to expand its coverage beyond them. This focused approach is helping Telemedia increase its subscriber base — it currently has 2.7 million customers, about 19 percent more than a year ago — and generate monthly ARPU (average revenue per user) of 1,071 Rupees ($21.44).
Bharti is hoping the new relationship will help it cut operating costs and speed up its ability to offer more advanced multimedia services for its retail and business customers.
This is the fourth managed network services deal AlcaLu has signed with a fixed-line carrier during the past 18 months, suggesting growing support for the outsourcing model that has gained favor primarily amongst mobile operators.
The three other agreements are with Brazil Telecom, BT Global Services , and Telecom New Zealand Ltd. (NYSE: NZT; New Zealand: TEL). AlcaLu also has arrangements with mobile operators, including Reliance Communications Ltd. in India, with which the vendor has also formed a joint venture. (See BT Outsources Ops to AlcaLu, Kiwis Pick AlcaLu, and AlcaLu, Reliance Form Joint Venture.)
In total, around 180 million fixed and mobile subscribers are connected to networks managed by AlcaLu, although Bharti Airtel’s mobile networks are managed by Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks.
